I love the symmetry of both the birds. I can see that you have an eye for photography. My suggestion is be patient. Don't use the digital zoom. Try to move as close as possible without disturbing the birds.
Which is your nearest birding spot? Your optical zoom is 380 mm. Wait for big birds like painted storks or other storks and wait for them to spread their wings. It would be frame filling for you, even if you are far off. Send me an uncropped shot by mail, and I will tell you in detail. Remember, if you save the same shot again and again, the jpeg will lose quality.

Thanks for the tips. Here again the originals are lost. My nearest public birding spot would be the crockadile park on road Chennai to Mahabalipuram . The other will be Vedanthangal-a bit further away. Sorry - Not able to send the originals
Just out of curiosity.. how does ranganathittu (near mysore) rate as a bird sanctuary... i was there once... its got a good variety of birds but small area...
I cannot remember a sanctuary called Ranganathitu. I may have gone there many years ago when my father was stationed at Kollegal. Do not remember this place.
Searched google earth for Ranganathittu. I certainly have walked those areas. However my memory fails me now. If I went there now I would certainly find the place totally denuded, compared to what it was many years ago.
okie.. thanks anyway...
Ranganthittu is before Mysore if you are driving from Bangalore. You will find birds and a few crocodiles sunning themselves in winter. The normal boating duration is for half an hour. You will find the crocodiles much closer and can click even with a 200 mm lens. So point and shoot camera will also give you frame filling shot.
